Bob Carels and Homer Chalifoux, friends since 2012
After Homer Chalifoux and his wife, Judy, moved to Havenwood-Heritage Heights in December 2011, Homer got involved with Reader’s Theatre, a group that performs radio scripts and plays onstage. That’s how he met Bob Carels, who has lived at Havenwood-Heritage Heights since 2005 with his wife, Renata. “Bob is quite active in many things, which helps me to sample activities through him,” says Homer. “There are so many things going on!”
Bob is very active, indeed, and his friendship with Homer has grown through their many shared interests. Before retirement, Bob was a computer application programmer and Homer was a biomedical engineer. At Havenwood-Heritage Heights, Bob heads the Computer Club and Homer helps to answer residents’ computer-related questions. Bob manages the Havenwood library and Homer and Judy shelve books. Homer also helps Bob run the closed-circuit TV channel, and the friends have even volunteered together at Scoops, the ice cream parlor.
It hasn’t taken long for Homer to get involved in other activities; he organizes lectures for World Concerns and attends the Men’s Discussion group. “It’s extremely easy to make friends here. You'd have to work hard not to!" laughs Homer. "You meet people here who are interested in different things and have varied backgrounds, and it’s great to get to know them and see life through their lens."
"Homer is very friendly and has a good sense of humor,” adds Bob. "This is the kind of place where everybody knows everybody. People are unpretentious and down-to-earth."
